Outpatient procedures

Post surgery information for patients receiving cataract surgery.

We believe the best choice for cataract surgery is extra-capsular performed as follows:

  1. Topical anesthesia (eyedrops)
  2. 2.0mm scleral incision
  3. Lens removal via phacoemulsification and aspiration.
  4. Implanting a foldable intraocular lens.

Because this method is an outpatient procedure, bed rest is not required and patients may return home after surgery.

  • Since you will not be able to drive home, please come to the clinic with a friend or family member.
  • Do not wash your face until your doctor says it's OK.
  • The day after surgery, you may take a shower from the neck down, but avoid getting water in your eyes. Do not take a bath.
  • Because you will not be able to see out of both eyes, you will not have proper depth perception. Please be extra cautious on stairs or any uneven places. Also, you should avoid using sharp objects such as scissors or knives.
  • You can eat anything you like, but you must not drink alcohol for a week.
  • Do not do any heavy lifting any other physical labor for 2 weeks.
  • Wait 2 weeks before gardening, watering, or weeding.
  • Restrict activities which stress the eyes (watching TV, using a computer, reading newspapers, etc.) to short periods of time.
  • Start taking the oral pills after dinner the day of the surgery. If you have stomach problems after taking the pill, or experience any other difficulties, stop taking the pills and inform your doctor at your next appointment.
  • Come to the clinic around 8:30 the day after surgery.

Post surgery information for patients receiving lacrimal surgery.

We can treat mild cases of lacrimal drainage obstruction with intubation therapy using a microendoscope. Because we make no incision, this is an outpatient procedure and patients may return home after surgery.

  • Depending on the situation, you may be required to wait for one to two hours before undergoing surgery.
  • Since you may not be able to drive home, please come to the clinic with a friend or family member.
  • Don't apply any make up.
  • If you have hives, asthma, or drug allergies, or if you have any other health concerns, please tell us in advance.
